About

I am a professor of Catholic Studies and Political Science and Senior Research
Professor at the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul
University. I served previously as the chair of the department of Political Science and director
of the Center for Church-State Studies. My areas of research focus on interactions
between ecclesiology, political economy, and culture.
Among my books are The Borders of Baptism: Identities, Allegiances and
the Church (Cascade Publishing, 2011) and the co-edited Witness of the Body: The Past,
Present and Future of Christian Martyrdom (Eerdmans Publishing, 2011). I have also
written The Two Churches: Catholicism and Capitalism in the World System (Duke University
Press, 1992); The (Magic) Kingdom of God: Christianity and Global Culture Industries
(Westview Press, 1997); and Christianity Incorporated (Brazos Press, 2002). I have edited several other books and published in scholarly journals including Studies in Christian Ethics, Sociology of Religion, and World Policy Journal.
